Color swaps have always been a favorite of cosplayers, and Nightwing offered a unique instance where he had an official one. Not only was the “Bludhaven red” suit a visual departure from Nightwing’s familiar style, it has subsequently allowed cosplay artists over the years to really flex their skills, by showing a familiar character in a color they traditionally don’t wear. Nightwing has had many different costumes over the years, from his iconic “Discowing” suit to his classic modern design. While they all generally follow the same theme, they still offer fans options when it comes to choosing what to cosplay.

Nightwing’s red-suit era was a major turning point for him. Most notably, it was the suit he was wearing when the Crime Syndicate killed him during the
Forever Evil
arc.

Considering this came at a time when DC was trying to relaunch, with the New 52, it’s possible some readers’ first time seeing Nightwing was in this red outfit, which would leave a lasting impression on cosplayers. Looking over the history of a character will always reveal tons of interesting costumes. As perfect as a character’s design can be, they can always use something visually new now and then. Batman and Spider-Man are among the most recognizable characters of all time, and they have tons of absurd and wild costume changes throughout their history.

The same is true for Nightwing, with this costume experiment being a prominent example. The red costume remains popular among cosplay artists, something @lucimakes reminded the fan community of with this excellent build.
