Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! This week is a very short one, with only three issues coming out that we’re covering. Honestly it’s a very well timed light week for me because I am just about to pack up and fly halfway around the world. Thankfully I don’t have any reviews coming out during that period and 90% of these Upcoming Comics posts I can do well ahead of time. It will be a struggle not being able to keep up with whatever’s happening in Gotham War, but hopefully travelling across Italy will console my aching heart. Ciao!

Thoughts: In almost any other series I would be rolling my eyes at an issue about relationship drama, but Waid has completely won my trust in his ability to handle human personal drama in a compelling way

Batman: City of Madness #1

Buried deep beneath Gotham City there exists another Gotham. This Gotham Below is a living nightmare, populated by twisted mirrors of our Gotham’s denizens, fueled by the fear and hatred flowing down from above. For decades, the doorway between the cities has been sealed and heavily guarded by the Court of Owls. But now the door swings wide, and the twisted version of the Dark Knight has escaped…to trap and train a Robin of his own. Batman must form an uneasy alliance with the Court and its deadly allies to stop him-and to hold back the wave of twisted super-villains, nightmarish versions of his own nemeses, each one worse than the last, that’s spilling into his streets! Visionary writer-artist Christian Ward unleashes his cosmic-horror take on Batman’s world, in a tribute to disturbing Dark Knight classics like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Gothic! You’ll never look at Batman’s villains the same way again…you simply won’t have the stomach for it!

Thoughts: Christian Ward’s art is gorgeous, and Lovecraft always felt like something that fit perfectly in the world of Gotham. I’m excited to see what he has in store for us.

Batman and Robin #2

Introducing Shush. Who does she work for? And how have they turned one of Batman’s greatest tools against him? Urban Jungle continues as the father and son dynamic duo are on the deadly case! But first, Damian must deal with…his first day of school?!

Thoughts: I’ll be honest, making the new villain be a girl version of Hush named Shush does not fill me with excitement.

Graphic Novel Watch

Sometimes you need more than floppies. Sometimes you want something that can sit nicely on your shelf that proudly displays your favorite stories. That’s when you turn to graphic novels. We’ve just got one coming out this week:

Ratings

Most Excited: Batman: City of Madness #1- A wholly singular creative work almost always a recipe for interesting results, and Ward’s pitch sounds like something that could create something great.

Least Excited: Batman and Robin #2- This wound up with “least excited” largely by process of elimination. It’s a pretty good title so far, but this is a strong week with only three titles to choose from. Someone had to be last.

Wild Card: World’s Finest: Teen Titans #4- I went back and forth between this and Batman: City of Madness #1 for most excited. Both World’s Finest series are consistently great, and this week it only lost by a hair.

Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
