Superman director James Gunn hails one of his “favorite characters” from the upcoming DC Universe film as anticipation builds for the summer blockbuster. Gunn shares a new look at Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific to recognize the character’s anniversary.

Via X (formerly Twitter), Gunn posted a behind-the-scenes photo from Superman production with himself and Gathegi in his full Mister Terrific costume, including his trusted black mask and what appears to be the Justice League’s initials on his suit. In the post, Gunn expressed his excitement about Mister Terrific, stating that “it’s been a joy bringing him to the big screen for the first time.”

Superman’s Biggest Dragon Ball Rival ISN’T Goku

Goku vs. Superman is legendary, but another Dragon Ball character is actually the true counterpart of DC’s legendary Man of Steel.

Gathegi will portray Michael Holt’s version of Mister Terrific, who first appeared in DC Comics in Spectre (Vol. 3) in June 1997. A brilliant inventor and successor to Terry Sloane’s iteration of Mister Terrific, Holt is a member of the Justice Society who, despite having no superpowers, is invisible to technology thanks to his T-Spheres. Gunn shared a previous sneak peek of Gathegi in his Mister Terrific costume in March to mark his birthday.

Superman isn’t Gathegi’s first go-round in the superhero genre, having portrayed Darwin in X-Men: First Class and Mr. Smiles in Netflix’s The Guardians of Justice. Gathegi is also known for his roles in the Twilight film series and The Harder They Fall.

Netflix’s Narnia Reboot Finds Its White Witch in 1 of Superman’s Lois Lane Finalists

Netflix and Greta Gerwig have found their White Witch for the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia reboot movie.

Mister Terrific is one of several heroes set to appear in Gunn’s Superman remake alongside the Last Son of Krypton, with Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Rex Mason/Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). The film also features some of Superman’s biggest adversaries, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), as it chronicles David Corenswet’s Man of Steel during his early years at the Daily Planet and his reconciliation of his Kryptonian heritage while living in Smallville, Kansas. Superman also features Clark Kent’s love interest, Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), and Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White (Wendell Pierce).

Gunn’s Superman remake, which he also wrote and produced, is one of the summer’s most anticipated films. The movie’s first trailer earned impressive viewership milestones and garnered positive reactions. Warner Bros. is reportedly banking heavily on Superman amid speculation regarding potential leadership changes at the studio. Warner Bros. co-CEO Mike De Luca is confident the film will live up to expectations, claiming it’s reminiscent of classic Superman movies.

Superman opens in theaters on Jul. 11.
