While Zoe Saldaña has nearly confirmed her departure from the MCU, the Avatar actress is not done with superhero roles yet. Saldaña aspires to play a comic book character that her sons can enjoy watching for the next 10 to 15 years. She has expressed her willingness to instantly take on a role in the DC Universe if James Gunn were to extend an offer.

Saldaña shares a close bond with Gunn and staunchly supported him when Disney briefly fired him over some resurfaced tweets. At the time, she, along with her co-stars, wrote an open letter to Disney and even visited Gunn’s Malibu home with her husband, Marco Perego-Saldaña.

When asked if she would be up for a role in James Gunn‘s new DCU, Saldaña was definitely interested. In particular, she conveyed interest in taking on a role that didn’t require spending hours in the makeup room. She revealed that her three sons were obsessed with comic books, and she would love to play superhero characters that her sons could relish for the next 10 to 15 years. Saldaña shared with ComicBook.com:

“Yes, I do, I do. I love the superhero universe of any sort. I have sons that are obsessed with comic books right now, and superheroes, so for me to be a part of projects that they will get to watch for the next 10, 15 years of their whole lives, it’s a dream for me.”

The Adam Project actress also shared that she would be grateful and open to various scenarios related to her DCU appearance—whether it never happens, happens under a different director, or happens again with James Gunn. Saldaña shared:

“If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful.”

If hired, DCU will be Zoe Saldaña’s fifth franchise in the fantasy genre after Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar, Star Trek, and MCU.

Why Did Zoe Saldaña Leave The MCU?

In November 2022, Zoe Saldaña shared in an interview with WWD that she was “stuck doing these franchises.” While she was grateful to collaborate with amazing directors and cast and play a role that fans love, she felt artistically stuck for the last 10 years. She revealed that she could not expand or grow or challenge herself in different roles across genres. The Nina actress shared with WWD:

“I’m very grateful for the opportunities that they provided, from collaborating with amazing directors and getting to meet cast members that I consider friends and getting to play a role that fans, especially children, love. I feel that for the last 10 years of my life, I’ve been just stuck. I felt stuck doing these franchises. It also meant that I felt artistically stuck in my craft of not being able to expand or grow or challenge myself by playing different sorts of genres and different roles.”

In April 2023, before the release of her film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, she told The Hollywood Reporter that it was the end of the road for Gamora. She shared, “I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians. It is the end for me, for Gamora.” Furthermore, she gave a goodbye speech during the last day of filming, where she thanked James Gunn for “just his time and his patience and his guidance and his friendship.”
