It’s almost time for James Gunn’s Superman. We’re so close, friends. It’ll be in United States theaters in less than a month, and it will really open to door into what this new DCU shared universe will look like from Gunn and Peter Safran.
There’s a lot that we already know from the movie, given that the trailers and promotional material have already revealed several plot points and all of that. Guy Gardner, Hawgirl, and more fan-favorite DC characters will show up in the movie. There may still be more surprises in store, however, as Gunn and Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult revealed just earlier this week that the movie also features a mysterious character named Mr. Handsome.
In an interview with Perri Nemiroff for Fandango, Gunn said that Mr. Handsome is “Lex’s creature that he created in a petri dish that drives around on this flying platform that is the ugliest, grossest creature in the world.”
Hoult further said that his son, who visited the set of Superman, declared Mr. Handsome as his favorite character. Hoult said that his son “kept on talking about Mr. Handsome the whole time. He’d be lying in bed and then he’d be like, ‘Dad, Mr. Handsome.’” Gunn further said that one of the producer’s kids, who also visited the set of Superman, had a similar reaction when seeing Mr. Handsome for the first time.

In DC Comics, a character named Mister Handsome, created by Peter Milligan and Tom Grinderg, debuted in 1992’s Catwoman: Defiant one-shot. The character, who is the commander of a group of henchmen called the Model Army, has not been seen since then. Judging by Gunn and Hoult’s comments, the Mr. Handsome that DC fans will see in the new Superman movie will not be the same character as seen in the comics, as the two entities appear to be entirely unrelated to one another.
Having said that, it’s entirely possible that Mr. Handsome could be given a larger DCU character arc after Superman. That means that we could potentially see Mr. Handsome evolve and have a bigger role in storylines in the near future; maybe, if they do some sort of Batman/Catwoman project, Mr. Handsome could show up in that and then play into things in a similar manner as he does in the aforementioned one-shot.
