DC Comics has been on a tear lately with great announcements and big swings. And while the idea of a completely original all-ages title may not seem like a big swing in the grand scheme of things, it is exceedingly rare for mainstream publishers. So shouts to Detective Comics Comics for announcing C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table, an entirely new six-issue series reteaming writer Tom Taylor and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo.
Also featuring colors by Rain Beredo and letters by Wes Abbott, the book will focus on, per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “an elite force known as the Camelot Corps has protected ancient secrets, waiting for the day when these myths are needed by the world. That day is today.”
“Like King Arthur asleep in a mountain, waiting for the day he will wake, CORT has been in my mind, and in my drafts folder, for a long time,” said Taylor via press release. “These brave young heroes will finally rise, and I couldn’t imagine anything more perfect than to partner with Daniele Di Nicuolo and DC Comics to bring them to the world. DC has some of the greatest heroic teams on the planet, like the Justice League and the Titans. Now a new team of champions is coming to take on a tyrant: the Children of the Round Table.”
Added Di Nicuolo, “I’m thrilled to be on this new project. It’s exciting to be a part of a project that represents a first for DC, and I can’t wait for readers of all ages to join this band of new, young heroes!”
In the series, kids Fel, Connor and friends are almost crushed by a giant stone from the sky — but when Fel pulls a sword from the stone (you get it), they all receive powers from Arthurian legend. Sure enough, these great, magical weapons give them incredible powers… But they also fight with each other, because they’re imbued with the “spirits of the Knights of the Round Table.” Oh, you know the Lancelot weapon and the King Arthur weapon are gonna have words with each other.
And of course, what would any Arthurian series be without a baddie. In this case? It’s Mordred, and the fate of the world rests with C.O.R.T.
Taylor and Di Nicuolo previously worked together on the excellent BOOM! Studios book Seven Secrets. And that all-ages adventure is certainly a blueprint for C.O.R.T. But it’s hard not to see this announcement and not think about Primer, another original title that leaned towards the all-ages market, and has been a surprise, perennial sales success. Fingers crossed C.O.R.T. does well, too, because — no pun intended on the current DC All In initiative — I’m all in on DC Comics innovating more on titles like this that appeal to everyone.
The first issue will run 40 pages, with subsequent issues running 32 pages. C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #1 hits stores on September 10, 2025, featuring a main cover by Di Nicuolo and variant covers by Darko Lafuente and Nicoletta Baldari. Subsequent issues will feature variants by Mattia De Iulis (#2), Bengal (#3), Jon Sommariva (#4), Tony Valente (#5) and Tirso (#6). Check out the covers to issue one, and interior pages, below.
