Jenny Blake’s ‘Master Planner’ follows in the footsteps of autobio stories from Batman Kevin Conroy, and DC writer/artist Phil Jimenez

Comic book fans might not be too familiar with the name Jenny Blake, but they almost certainly are familiar with her work. Blake, who adopted her name after transitioning in February 2025, has a comic book history that includes stints as a writer at both DC and Marvel — she co-created Black Lightning with artist Trevor Von Eeden, as well as Marvel’s Champions superhero team — as well as a celebrated stint as a comic book critic with a long-running column in the dear, departed Comic Buyer’s Guide. And, this June, Blake will tell her story in DC’s annual DC Pride anthology special.

Following in the footsteps of past DC Pride stories from the late Kevin Conroy and writer/artist Phil Jimenez, Blake is offering ‘Master Planner,’ an autobiographical story for the 2025 DC Pride special, illustrated by Sara Soler; the story is described by DC as “a poignant exploration of Blake’s identity, authenticity, and the universal quest for self-understanding.”

Talking about the story, Blake said, “When I came out as transgender, the comics community was overwhelmingly loving and supportive. Being asked to contribute to this anthology was unexpected and so affirming. I’ve done a lot of cool things in my 50-plus years in comics, but this story is one of the things I’m most proud of. I see myself in this story and I hope readers see something of themselves in it. I had a wonderful time writing my story, and I hope the readers enjoy it as much as I did.”

‘Master Planner’ joins the previously announced anthology arc of stories featuring queer DC Universe characters including Green Lantern Alan Scott, Harley Quinn, Connor Hawke Green Arrow, and more. Additionally, the special issue will include contributions from DC fans about how the company’s characters have inspired their own lives and experiences, featuring fan art, writing, and cosplay.

DC Pride 2025 will be released June 4.
