Superman director James Gunn just revealed a new behind-the-scenes photo. The filmmaker celebrated Mr. Terrific’s birthday on social media. It’s not actually Edi Gathegi’s celebration. But, he plays the DC Comics superhero in Superman. Gunn posted a picture of his conversation with the star as they were shooting a scene together.
Gunn typed on Bluesky, “Happy Anniversary to Mr. Terrific, who has long been one of my favorite characters – it’s been a joy bringing him to the big screen for the first time with my pal Edi Gathegi. #Superman is in theaters July 11.”
One of the big draws for the upcoming Superman film is how many other DC Comics characters are along for the ride. The director felt like making this version of Metropolis a living, breathing entity outside of the Man of Steel was crucial. Mr. Terrific is just a little part of that overall effort. Fans are stoked about it.
Superman’s James Gunn Celebrates Mr. Terrific
Superman is in an interesting position because the character is so beloved. At the same time, there hasn’t been a solo appearance for The Man of Tomorrow since Man of Steel. It’s been a long road to this year’s flick. Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter that tapping into Superman’s universal nature is a key to the character. He also acknowledged it’s a completely different task than some of his other work in the superhero genre.
Gunn notes, “It’s easier to take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians, or Peacemaker, and then do whatever you want with them. People in every single country in the world know the story of Superman.”
“How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?,” he wondered. “So, it just took me some time to try to figure it out.”
