Most film distributors like to use press releases and major online events to announce new movies and shows. James Gunn, the director of Superman and co-president of DC Studios, prefers a quick and subtle message on social media. The writer/director is highly regarded for keeping the fan base up-to-date using platforms like Threads to answer fan questions and share news. With Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, set to release in just over a month, his phone is blowing up more than ever. While fans were expecting answers and details about Superman (which Gunn has more than provided), the director also teased that a brand-new project is in the works.
Among the Superman questions that James Gunn was bombarded with on Instagram (via The Direct), the director was asked by one fan about the movie’s best boy getting his own time in the spotlight. “If we got an animated spin-off series of Krypto alone, I’d be happy,” the comment read. Krypto the Wonderdog is Clark Kent’s trusted canine companion in the comics, and long-time DC Comics fans are incredibly excited to finally see him brought to life in live-action on the big screen.

“Zero Truth”: James Gunn Denies Long-Running Rumor About ‘Superman’
James Gunn has once again taken to social media to shut down false DCU rumors.
Regarding Krypto’s standalone series, what started out as one fan’s dream might have turned out to be accurate than they thought. While the animated show hasn’t been officially confirmed by DC Studios or Max, Gunn teased that it is in the works at DC Studios. “You’re in luck,” was his coy but positive response. Very few fans will complain about Krypto receiving an animated spin-off. From the very first teaser for Superman, the Kryptonian best boy stole every scene he was in, and fans want the character to have a long future on the big and small screen within the DCU.
If Krypto the Wonderdog’s standalone animated show is officially greenlit, it will be the eighth show produced by DC Studios for the rebooted DCU. Fans have already been treated to the first, which was 2024’s Creature Commandos. The series featured the undead and supernatural members of the Suicide Squad, led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). The next DCU series will also be released this year, with John Cena returning for Season 2 of Peacemaker.
As for brand-new shows, the next on the slate is Lanterns. The series will follow Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), two of Earth’s Green Lanterns, as they investigate a mysterious murder. Amanda Waller already appeared in Creature Commandos, but the character is also getting her own live-action series. Viola Davis is confirmed to return for the show, but the project has remained in development limbo since it was announced.
The DCU’s other upcoming series have also received a lack of substantial updates in the past months. Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and the animated Blue Beetle series have all been confirmed for development. But, no one outside of DC Studios knows when we can expect the shows to enter production, let alone release.
