The Summer of Superman is here, and with it comes a swath of Super-Family-related titles, including a brand-new solo series for Supergirl, starring Kara Zor-El alongside Lex Luthor’s daughter, Lena Luthor. Given the beloved history these characters share in the CW’s Supergirl TV series, fans naturally wondered if the new comic will draw any inspiration from the show. As it turns out, we have the answer.
…fans of the Supergirl comics and those who loved the CW series are in good hands with Campbell.
Sophie Campbell’s new Supergirl series is just around the corner, with its first issue set to debut on May 14, 2025. Thanks to series solicitations, fans already know that Lena Luthor will play a major role in the narrative, as she and Kara team up to face a common enemy. This sets up an exciting dynamic between the two, one that fans of the CW’s Supergirl series will no doubt be eager to see, given how the show elevated Lena and Kara’s friendship.
During League of Comic Geeks’ AMA (Ask Me Anything) with Campbell, where fans posted questions and she responded, one standout query asked whether the CW’s portrayal of Lena had influenced Campbell’s version of the character.

In response to a fan’s question about whether Katie McGrath’s Lena from the CW’s Supergirl served as inspiration while writing her own version of the character, Sophie Campbell shared that she also loves McGrath’s Lena, even calling her “the best.” She clarified, however, that in the comics, Lena is Lex Luthor’s daughter rather than his sister, which makes her take “a bit different.” Campbell noted that her version of Lena is “younger and less put-together than the CW Lena,” but emphasized that she still aims to portray a strong friendship between Lena and Kara, one of the most beloved aspects of the CW’s interpretation.

The countdown to James Gunn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is on, and ahead of Supergirl’s DCU debut, DC is bringing back one of her best villains.
As the fan who asked the question pointed out, the CW’s take gave Lena and Kara an exceptionally notable bond. Hence, Campbell following up this statement by saying, “I’m definitely aiming for a strong friendship between she and Kara,” shows that there definitely will be a bit of the Arrowverse in her own interpretations, since she too wants to portray the duo in a way that puts an emphasis on a strong friendship between the two. This is exciting news for lovers of Lena and Kara’s friendship in the Arrowverse, as it seems that fans can expect to get another taste of it soon.
Sophie Campbell: “Hi! I also love Katie McGrath’s Lena, she is the best. The character in the comics is Lex Luthor’s daughter rather than sister, though, so our Lena is a bit different, she’s younger and less put-together than the CW Lena. I’m definitely aiming for a strong friendship between she and Kara, in any case!”

With all the talk of inspiration and the CW’s Supergirl, some fans may be wondering where Sophie Campbell is drawing her take on Supergirl from. Fortunately, during League of Comic Geeks’ Ask Me Anything, a fan asked this exact question. In response, Campbell admitted she wasn’t sure how to exactly describe her angle on Kara’s character but noted that her goal is to make Supergirl “more ‘human’ and warm than some of her recent appearances, while trying to hew closer to her in the 70s.” She went on to explain that Kara’s solo 1972 series and later Adventure Comics issues are where most of her inspiration comes from. Hence, it seems fans of the Supergirl comics and those who loved the CW series are in good hands with Campbell.
