DC has just given fans a major confirmation: as they revisit their 90-year history, they’ll be officially establishing Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons, Diana Prince’s mother, as the Wonder Woman of WWII, shaking up previously established lore in a big way. However, this isn’t the first time DC has christened Hippolyta with the Wonder Woman mantle.
Recently, Mark Waid sat down with The Comic Pals to discuss his ongoing works such as Justice League Unlimited,Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, and more, as well as some of his upcoming projects for DC. Perhaps the most notable of these is New History of the DC Universe #1, which is set to release on June 25, 2025.
During the interview, the question of who holds the Wonder Woman title came up, with Mark Waid confirming that Diana Prince is the current Wonder Woman, while Hippolyta will be the Golden Age Wonder Woman. While Hippolyta has taken on the mantle before, this still marks a major change to DC lore, especially considering the purpose of the New History of the DC Universe series.
Hippolyta Replaces Diana as Golden Age Wonder Woman in Bold Retcon

For those unfamiliar with Mark Waid’s upcoming four-issue limited series, New History of the DC Universe, this series will offer fans a comprehensive reimagining of DC Comics’ extensive 90-year history, narrated by Barry “the Flash” Allen. The series has the ultimate goal of unifying the vast and intricate continuity of the DC Universe into a cohesive master timeline, something that has understandably gotten messy over the years due to retcons, reboots, and the passage of time. Given DC’s 90-year history, this is a tall order that writer Mark Waid and artists Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck will be undertaking, but it is undoubtedly worth the effort.
As part of fixing the timeline and bringing a sense of order to DC’s vast narratives, Waid has confirmed that he will be making Hippolyta the Wonder Woman of the Golden Age. This is a major change, given that Diana Prince has typically been portrayed as the Wonder Woman of World War II in DC’s narratives, both in comics and in other mediums such as the animated movie Justice Society: World War II. This is a bold and ambitious move on Waid’s part, as some fans are less than thrilled with the retcon, citing that the change detracts from Diana’s legacy, particularly her role as the first Amazon to make contact with Man’s World. Others, however, are excited for the change.

It’s worth noting that New History of the DC Universe won’t be the first time DC has given Queen Hippolyta the Wonder Woman mantle. In the 1990s, during John Byrne’s run on Wonder Woman, Hippolyta assumed the mantle after Diana was believed to be dead. One of her first adventures involved traveling back in time to the 1940s to assist Jay “The Flash” Garrick on a mission. After the situation was resolved, Hippolyta remained in that time period for an extended stay and joined the Justice Society of America, serving as Wonder Woman during World War II. Therefore, Hippolyta being established as the Wonder Woman of the Golden Age in New History of the DC Universe won’t be her first time in the role, but it will now become part of the main continuity.
