Thanks to James Gunn, the DCU is set to bring long-overlooked Justice League heroes into the spotlight, finally giving them the recognition they deserve. Characters like Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner are all getting their due. But there are two DC heroes I’m practically begging DC to focus on—and I know I’m not the only one.

DC has officially announced a new comic series spotlighting the beloved duo Fire and Ice, best known among fans as one of the most iconic best-friend pairings in the DC Universe. Frequent members of the Justice League International—and now the Justice League—Fire and Ice stand out thanks to their contrasting personalities, unique powers, and bold fashion sense.

Despite being lesser known, they remain one of DC’s most fun and tight-knit duos. Following their 2023–2024 miniseries Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville, the duo is set to return in an all-new solo series, Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over, written by Joanne Starer with art by Stephen Byrne, launching this April.

Fire & Ice Are Getting a New Comic Series, But What I Really Want Is a Big Screen Debut

While I’m beyond ecstatic that the BFF duo is getting another comic series, what I’m really craving is their DCU debut—whether through a live-action TV series or, preferably, on the silver screen alongside DC’s other heroes who are finally stepping into the spotlight. And thanks to Reddit, I know I’m not alone in this sentiment. On the DC discussion board, Fire and Ice recently became a hot topic, all thanks to a phenomenal Dan Mora variant cover for Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #2, set for release this May.

The artwork showcases cubed, spliced images of Fire and Ice in Mora’s iconic style, seamlessly blending them in an artfully mismatched yet striking way. His incredible work has drawn attention to the series, even from those who might have otherwise overlooked it, igniting excitement for a title that had been flying under the radar. While the top upvoted comment in the discussion praised Mora’s art, the second most upvoted was a passionate call for a live-action DCU project featuring the duo—a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with for several reasons.

Justice League Just Turned Two Heroes I Didn’t Care About Into New Faves

I’m officially giving Mark Waid a standing ovation for transforming two Justice League characters I couldn’t have cared less about into instant faves.

Fire & Ice Would Be an EPIC Addition to the DCU (& Here’s Why)

First and foremost, I want Fire and Ice to make their DCU debut because they are incredibly well-rounded characters with a long-standing and respected history in comics, making them more than deserving of the spotlight. Beyond that, they would bring some much-needed “new blood” into DC’s live-action sector. While I’m beyond excited for the new Superman movie, will always be greedy for more Batman content, and am desperately waiting for Wonder Woman news, it’s long past time for DC to take a chance on characters beyond their flagship heroes. Fire and Ice are compelling enough to truly capture audiences’ attention.

A Fire and Ice debut would also add variety to DC’s typical movie storylines. While most films have supporting casts, they usually center around a single headliner—case in point: Wonder Woman, Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Batman—all focused on one main character. But with Fire & Ice, DC would be exploring a duo, introducing a fresh dynamic that sets them apart. Additionally, DC needs to show more love to its heroines and highlight characters from outside the United States, and Fire and Ice would be the perfect place to start. And, of course, I simply want to see two super-best friends going on epic, heroic adventures together.

James Gunn’s DCU Is the Perfect Place for Fire & Ice to Finally Shine

With James Gunn placing a major focus on the Super-Family in his upcoming projects, Superman: Legacy and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, there’s no better time for Fire and Ice to be introduced to the DCU. Their last comic series took place in Smallville—Clark Kent’s hometown—firmly establishing a strong connection between them and the Man of Steel. An after-credits scene set in Smallville could serve as a perfect bridge between Fire and Ice and Superman, seamlessly integrating them into the larger DCU. While this may be unlikely, the current state of the DCU presents immense opportunities to bring these underrated Justice League heroes into the spotlight.
