Skyler Gisondo’s portrayal of Jimmy Olsen just got James Gunn’s stamp of approval. The Superman writer-director recently shared a new look at the DC Universe’s Jimmy Olsen to celebrate the character’s anniversary.
The new image was shared on Threads and shows Gunn chatting with Gisondo, in costume as Jimmy Olsen, during a break in filming. “Today is the anniversary of Superman’s Best Pal Jimmy Olsen. [Skyler Gisondo’s] performance in [Superman] is gonna knock you out of your socks,” Gunn captioned the picture, which was taken by Jessica Miglio. Although an unnamed “office boy” debuted earlier in DC Comics, Jimmy Olsen’s first official appearance was on the radio serial The Adventures of Superman on Apr. 15, 1940. Gisondo will become the fifth actor to portray Jimmy Olsen in a live-action DC movie. Tommy Bond first portrayed the character, often depicted as a young, red-headed photojournalist, in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). He was then portrayed by Marc McClure in the Christopher Reeve-led Superman films, as well as the 1984 spinoff film Supergirl. Sam Huntington stepped into the role for Superman Returns, which serves as an homage sequel to the first two Reeve-led Superman movies.
While Olsen was largely absent from the DC Extended Universe, a reimagined version of the character briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s 2016 sequel to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, played by Michael Cassidy. On the small screen, Jimmy Olsen has been portrayed in live-action by Jack Larson (Adventures of Superman), Michael Landes and Justin Whalin (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), Aaron Ashmore (Smallville), Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), and Douglas Smith (Superman & Lois).

While Creature Commandos was the first DC Studios project released that was set in the DCU, Gunn has repeatedly stated that he views Superman as the official start of the shared universe. David Corenswet leads the upcoming movie as its title character, with Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult co-starring as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively.
While plot details remain largely under wraps for Superman, Gunn has shared that the blockbuster will focus on the titular hero as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian roots with his human upbringing. The DCU movie will also avoid retelling the Man of Steel’s origin story, instead picking up with Clark Kent already operating as Superman and working at the Daily Planet with Lois. Lex Luthor has also been confirmed as the main antagonist of Superman. However, Gunn has strongly hinted that he won’t be the only villain in the movie, with the first trailer for Superman teasing a secondary threat wearing a full-body black costume.
Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first DCU movie.
