Comic book fans are familiar with the DC Trinity, consisting of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, in the pages of DC Comics. However, for James Gunn’s DC Universe, it sounds like a fourth superhero will join the Trinity as one of the faces of the franchise.

During Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q1 earnings call, CEO David Zaslav named the four superheroes who DC Studios is planning on using to revitalize the DC brand. “When you look at the major characters that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl,” Zaslav revealed. “So those are — we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.”

James Gunn Reportedly Bringing Another MCU Star To the DCU (But Not For a Role That’s Already Been Teased)

The report makes total sense since Gunn and the actor worked together previously.

While DC fans will be pleased to learn that Gunn and DC Studios will prioritize bringing the DC Trinity (and Supergirl) to the DCU, there’s one noticeable problem with Zaslav’s statement: Wonder Woman and Batman have not been cast yet, and their solo movies remain without release dates. Batman, at least, has already been introduced into the DCU via a silent, silhouette cameo in Creature Commandos. The Gotham City-based vigilante also has an announced movie in development, The Brave and the Bold, although it is seemingly taking a lot longer to come together than originally expected.

As for Wonder Woman, DC Studios has not announced a new solo movie for her yet. So far, the only Wonder Woman-related content DC has unveiled has been the planned prequel series Paradise Lost, which is expected to take place before Wonder Woman’s birth. The live-action series was previously described by DC Studios as “a Game of Thrones-type story about Themyscira” that “involves all of the darkness, drama and political intrigue behind this society of only women.” While unconfirmed, many fans believe that Paradise Lost might pull inspiration from the DC Black Label graphic novel series, Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, which Gunn praised on social media in 2023.

‘Who Batman Is to Me’: Todd McFarlane Names Star Trek Actor as Best Casting Choice for DCU’s Batman

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane picks a Star Trek actor as his top choice for playing Batman in James Gunn’s DCU.

With Wonder Woman and Batman not making their live-action DCU debuts anytime soon, DC Studios and Warner Bros. will need to depend on Superman and Supergirl getting the new shared universe off and running. Both superheroes will debut in Gunn’s Superman, which is set to hit theaters in July. David Corenswet stars as the titular Man of Steel, while Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is only expected to have a cameo in the DCU blockbuster. She will then headline her own solo movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is now in post-production and on track to be released in 2026. Other DCU projects that are set to be released over the next two years (but are not expected to feature any of Zaslav’s main four) include Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, and Clayface.

Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on June 26, 2025.
