The Summer of Superman is here, and with it comes a swath of Super-Family-related titles, including a brand-new solo series for Supergirl. While the series is entirely new, it will reintroduce certain elements from Kara Zor-El’s past, including Silver Age characters and one of her most divisive costume designs, and we’re low-key excited to see it return.

May 14, 2025, will mark the official debut of writer and artist Sophie Campbell’s new Supergirl series, bringing the Maiden of Might back to the forefront of DC’s storytelling. The series is highly anticipated, with the upcoming 2026 Supergirl movie only adding to the hype.
Recently, Campbell sat down with League of Comic Geeks for an AMA (Ask Me Anything), where fans posted questions on the discussion forum and she replied directly. Among the questions was whether Supergirl’s divisive red headband would be making a return; surprisingly, Campbell suggested there is a chance that it will.
Facsimile Edition 2024 by George Pérez & Tom Ziuko for Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 (1985)
Kara Zor-El’s red headband was part of her pre-Crisis look and is even featured on the iconic Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 cover by George Pérez, cementing it as a staple in her costume history. However, the red headband remains an extremely divisive design element, with fans typically falling into two camps: they either love it or hate it. Because of this strong split in opinion, it stands as one of Supergirl’s most controversial looks. Yet, whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that seeing such an iconic piece of her comic history return is immensely exciting.
Fans often describe Supergirl’s red headband look as a product of its time, specifically the ’80s, when Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” era, big hair, and leg warmers were in full swing. Given that Supergirl’s red headband first appeared in November 1983, it’s clear this look was heavily influenced by that cultural moment. Now, four decades later, the return of this instantly recognizable design appears to be on the horizon. However, based on Campbell’s wording when confirming its comeback, it may not be as straightforward as fans expect.

Given that the character design and Kara’s Supergirl costume for Campbell’s series have already been revealed through concept art by Campbell herself and other artists, and that all of it is notably lacking the red headband, this confirmation of the accessory’s return is more than a little surprising. This suggests the red headband will likely make only a cameo rather than being a core and recurring part of Kara’s costume, especially since Campbell specifically said, “Both the headband and Power Girl may make an appearance.” Since someone is confirmed to be impersonating Supergirl in the series, it is also possible that the imposter could be the one wearing the red headband, leaving fans to speculate until the series officially launches.
