DC Studios reveals the next animated TV show that is in the works, as Mister Miracle is coming to life in animation. James Gunn’s DC Universe is starting to take shape, with he and co-CEO Peter Safran set to expand the world of DC through live-action and animation. DC Studios found success with Creature Commandos, and more animated properties are on their way for the franchise, as another DC character is about to come to life.
DC Comics scribe Tom King, who is also an executive producer for HBO’s Lanterns, is set to produce an animated Mister Miracle TV show, though a network distributor is still being determined. The report states that King is set to serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series, and a first look image for Mister Miracle has also been revealed. Check it out below:
At the time of this story’s publication, it’s unclear if Mister Miracle is set to be part of the DCU timeline or if it exists in its own continuity. The series, which is currently in production according to Warner Bros. Discovery, doesn’t have any cast members attached. DC Studios also provided the following Mister Miracle series logline, as it teases the following:
No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick — and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation — the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe.
As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.
What DC’s Mister Miracle Show Means
With Mister Miracle becoming an active player for DC Studios, there are several key takeaways about this new animated series. To begin with, the Mister Miracle TV show will be based on King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner Award–winning 12-issue comic of the same name. This is the second work from King’s comic roster that is getting adapted or used for inspiration, as his Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series is being used for the live-action movie with Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.
If Mister Miracle ends up being part of the DCU, this means Gunn’s reboot is already exploring major villains like Darkseid in this continuity, as the Apokolips ruler is set to play a vital role in the animated show. King being the one to run the Mister Miracle show also highlights that DC Studios looks to be still willing to re-explore and retool previously scrapped projects. During the DCEU era, King was co-writing a New Gods movie script with director Ava DuVernay before it was canceled by Warner Bros. in April 2021, with Mister Miracle and Big Barda being eyed to appear in the film.
Our Take On DC’s Mister Miracle Show
Given the incredible run that King and Gerads had with the Mister Miracle comic, the animated TV show is an exciting opportunity for DC Studios to bring one of DC’s most complex characters to a broader audience. Between the many sci-fi elements that come with Mister Miracle and his ties to other corners of DC’s lore, if this release ends up being connected to the DCU timeline, it will only help further expand Gunn’s franchise. Hopefully, as Mister Miracle gets further into production, more updates will emerge shortly, including where the show will end up airing.
Mister Miracle
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former Female Fury known as Big Barda. You might say Scott Free has everything…so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick—except one. He has never escaped death.
