More information has come to light regarding why a new writer has been hired to work on Mike Flanagan’s script for Clayface.
Clayface is a new DCU movie that will arrive in theaters in 2026. While it wasn’t part of the initial projects James Gunn and Peter Safran presented when announcing their DCU slate, the movie quickly became a priority for DC Studios and Warner Bros. after Flanagan pitched the project.
Gunn said in February 2025, via TheWrap, “Clayface is the crazy one, because we had no plans on making a Clayface movie. Mike (Flanagan) came in and he pitched the Clayface movie, and it was great…so he turned in the script, and it’s one of the best scripts that we read from the whole time.”
Just yesterday, however, TheWrap reported that Drive’s Hossein Amini had been hired to rewrite Flanagan’s Clayface script. Many DC fans wondered why Flanagan wasn’t doing the rewrites and, furthermore, why rewrites were needed in the first place.
It’s not immediately clear how much of the Clayface script Amini is retooling; however, Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider is reporting that it may be “getting a Page 1 rewrite.” Having said that, Sneider also reports that “this is par for the course, and most blockbusters cycle through a number of writers for a number of reasons.”
According to Sneider, Flanagan is too busy working on the Carrie television show to rewrite his own script, though he still could get a writing credit for the movie. That show does not have a premiere date yet, as it was just officially greenlit by Amazon Prime Video last month.
Additionally, Amini has already turned in his rewrite for Clayface, according to Sneider.
Clayface is expected to go into production this coming October, though no casting has yet been announced. The movie currently has a September 11, 2026, release date from Warner Bros. Pictures.
