The DC Extended Universe had its criticisms, but some movies were true box office hits. The universe, which started in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, had extraordinary success with films like Aquaman and Wonder Woman, but the sequels weren’t as well received.

Aquaman premiered in 2018 with Jason Momoa in the titular role, and exceeded expectations with $1.1 billion worldwide. However, the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which marked the final entry in the DCEU, was not as popular, and didn’t reach half of the first entry’s gross. However, two years later, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom found redemption on Netflix, where it became a streaming hit, Tudum reveals.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was just released on Netflix in several territories across Central and South America. Immediately, the superhero film became a hit, as it entered the Top 10 in 22 countries. Out of them, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom became the No. 1 film in six.

For the week between May 26 and June 1, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom attracted 5.8 million views, and it had 12 million hours viewed. The final DCEU film entered the charts in third place in the global Top 10. While the superhero film is not available to stream on Netflix U.S., it is available on Max. This is hardly the first time the sequel has been in the charts, proving that, despite its poor theatrical run, the film wasn’t a total flop.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom didn’t come close to the original $1.1 billion. The superhero movie ended its run with only $439.3 million against a budget of $205 million. Although the Jason Momoa sequel didn’t make a profit, it was did have an unexpectedly positive outcome. In 2023, several films that had all the ingredients to become a hit, failed to perform. Just like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, other titles like Fast X, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Marvels, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ended up losing millions.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also wasn’t a critics’ darling. The movie received a dreadful 33% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but more than twice the score from the audience, who gave the final DCEU film an encouraging 79% approval score on the Popcornmeter.

As James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the DCEU into the DC Universe, which gave fans an appetizer with the animated series Creature Commandos and the upcoming live-action film Superman, Aquaman’s future is uncertain. The character drew interest in the DCEU, but the two co-CEOs are now focused on telling different stories, and it’s likely Momoa’s character will be recast.

However, that doesn’t stop Momoa’s superhero journey. Although the actor played Aquaman in the DCU, he has already found a new role: Lobo. The actor has been a longtime fan of the character, and he is set to make his debut as the chainsmoking mercenary in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The superhero movie marks the second feature film in the DCU after Superman, and is set to premiere on June 26, 2026.
