DC Comics has had a long history of live-action adaptations of some of their greatest heroes and villains. Having existed far longer than their major competitor, Marvel Comics, DC has had the opportunity for so many adaptations over the decades. Whether in film or television, some of the most compelling characters in the DC canon have been brought to life in live-action.

Though it is more often than not that live-action adaptations of characters from comic books fall short of the source material, there are a few rare instances where the adaptations actually improve on the source material and enhance the characters. When it happens, it is a genuine treat for fans of the comics and more casual fans of the live-action adaptations alike.

Peacemaker Was Given a Major Upgrade in Live-Action

Seen In: The Suicide Squad (2021) and Peacemaker (2022-Present)

Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, was previously one of the most obscure and borderline-forgotten characters in the entire DC Comics canon. When director James Gunn brought Peacemaker to life on the big screen in his excellent 2021 film, The Suicide Squad, fans everywhere were enamored by the character and his story.

DC Comics announces a brand-new comic series, Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature, from DC Studios co-head James Gunn.

Played wonderfully (and surprisingly soulfully) by John Cena, Peacemaker was so compelling that he warranted his own live-action series, which garnered critical and audience acclaim upon release. Peacemaker’s success in live-action even brought the character back in a major way in the comics.

Bane Was a Terrifying Enemy Without Venom in Christopher Nolan’s Gotham

Seen In: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Image via Warner Bros.

Bane is one of Batman’s most iconic foes, and though it might be controversial to claim that his live-action iteration in director Christopher Nolan’s finale to the Dark Knight Trilogy is superior to the comic iteration, it might just be true. Tom Hardy’s iteration of Bane is so terrifying, so full of menace and malice and violence, that it is genuinely harrowing to see Batman come up against him in combat.

In the comics, Bane has had numerous excellent storylines, but he is often misused and underutilized in ways that make him feel like an afterthought. Nolan’s interpretation was ferocious and emotional in equal measure, and it might just be the best version of the famous Batman villain that fans have ever seen.

Steppenwolf Was Brought to the Forefront By Zack Snyder

Seen In: Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

Image via Warner Bros. Discovery

Though director Zack Snyder is somewhat of a controversial figure in the world of comic book filmmaking, especially when it comes to the Justice League and its roster of heroes, it’s hard to deny just how well Snyder did with bringing the somewhat forgettable character of Steppenwolf to life in live-action. In the comics, Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid, the iconic and terrifying ruler of Apokolips.

While Steppenwolf is a mostly overlooked character in the source material, he’s portrayed as a major antagonist in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a film packed with epic action, dramatic moments, and terrifying character design. Snyder brought a minor side character and made him a major threat to the DC Universe, doing so incredibly effectively.

Deathstroke Was Actually Compelling on Television

Seen In: Arrow (2012-2020)

Image via Warner Bros.

Deathstroke might just be the most overrated character in all of DC Comics history. A somewhat generic character with a cool design and a handful of exciting stories, Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, is so often hyped up to be one of the universe’s most compelling anti-heroes, and then his stories are so often…mediocre.

Surprisingly, the CW TV series Arrow actually gave fans a surprisingly compelling version of the character in its early seasons. Actor Manu Bennett brought life and depth to the character of Slade Wilson, and despite the fact that many fans love the comic book version, Arrow‘s iteration was far more interesting on a level deeper than the surface “cool factor”.

Vibe Was a Major Player On Team Flash

Seen In: The Flash (2014-2023)

Image via Warner Bros.

Another CW series that found surprising ways to adapt and evolve characters from the original comic books was The Flash, a series that, despite having its ups and downs, was generally beloved by fans of the character and his comic book stories. Cisco Ramone, also known as Vibe, was one of the major players in the series, and his goofy attitude and scientific knowledge made him integral to the Scarlet Speedster’s success as a hero.

10 Things About The Flash That Make No Sense

The Flash has a long DC history with repetitive sidekicks, villains from the future, and confusing cosmic forces that don’t always make sense.

The character of Vibe is somewhat forgettable in the comics, having not made much of a mark since his debut in Justice League of America Annual #2, but his live-action iteration became a fan-favorite with viewers of The Flash, and it made the character somewhat of a household name for a good chunk of time. The Flash isn’t perfect, but it had a genuine sense of respect for the source material, and Vibe’s adaptation is a major testament to that fact.

Harley Quinn Is More Engaging in Live-Action

Seen In: Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021)

Harley Quinn is one of the most beloved characters in the entire modern DC Comics landscape, but it has become abundantly clear that the character has become oversaturated in the source material. She appears in numerous books, crossovers, and covers, and these excessive appearances have diminished the impact of the classic villain turned anti-hero.

Margot Robbie’s live-action portrayal of Harley Quinn, however, is one of the freshest, most engaging live-action versions of a DC character of all time, and she is certainly one of the major standouts in an otherwise lackluster DCEU. Robbie brought real emotional weight, comedic prowess, and sincere heroism to the character without feeling annoying or forced, and that is a real triumph.

The Penguin Has Never Been More Compelling Than in His Own Series

Seen In: The Batman (2022) and The Penguin (2024)

Image via Warner Bros. Television

Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, is one of Batman’s longest-running, most beloved villains. Though he has appeared in many Batman stories over the years, there hasn’t been one particular storyline that has cemented him as an all-time villain in the way that stories like The Killing Joke or Knightfall cemented Joker and Bane, respectively.

Cristin Milioti’s Sogia Gigante/Sofia Falcone is The Penguin’s breakout villain who played a pivotal role in some of Batman’s most legendary comics.

In live-action, however, actor Colin Farrell brought genuine pathos to the role of the Penguin in his appearances in The Batman film, and in his own miniseries, The Penguin. While still retaining the villainous, monstrous characterization of the Penguin, the HBO miniseries effectively fleshed out the character’s past, present, and aspirational future, surpassing what had been done in the comics with the character.

Amanda Waller Is More Morally Complex in Her Live-Action Appearances

Seen In: Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad (2021), and Peacemaker (2022-Present)

Image via Warner Bros. Discovery

Though Amanda Waller has appeared a few times over the years in live-action, the specific iteration that has surpassed the comic version is Viola Davis’s complex and menacing interpretation of the head of the Suicide Squad. Villainous yet still maintaining a certain level of pragmatic virtue, Amanda Waller, as portrayed by Davis, is a major standout in the DCEU.

Taking from the rogues gallery of dozens of heroes, the Suicide Squad has some of the most dangerous fighters in DC Comics, but who is the best?

The comic book version of Waller has, in recent years especially, become somewhat one-note. She is often depicted more overtly villainously than she is in the films and television series, and that makes her far less interesting. The complexity of her character is the greatest asset of the live-action iteration, and it’s the reason she surpasses her comic counterpart.

Steve Trevor’s Live-Action Iteration Brought Charm to a Boring Character

Seen In: Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Image via Warner Bros.

Steve Trevor is a complicated character in the comic books. While he is often compelling in relation to Wonder Woman and her stories, writers often struggle to find interesting things to do with the character once her origin has been established. He’s a somewhat boring love interest, and he has no real personality of his own.

In the films, however, Steve Trevor is the heart and soul of Wonder Woman’s connection to and love for the world of men. He is the bridge between her past on Paradise Island and her future in the “real world”. Even in the generally mediocre Wonder Woman 1984, Steve Trevor’s appearance through magical means is utilized to great effect to influence and motivate Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

The Riddler Has Never Been More Menacing Than in His Recent Live-Action Iteration

Seen In: The Batman (2022)

The Riddler has remained one of Batman’s greatest foes since his earliest appearance in Detective Comics #140, and, despite this fact, his comic book iteration isn’t even the best version of the character. Although DC Comics has some incredible Riddler stories, the version of the villain that appears in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, The Batman, is far and away the best iteration of the character.
