Casting was still underway to determine who would play the men of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe.
Challengers star Mike Faist reportedly was lined up for a role, and a female French resistance fighter had also been cast, according to the report.
As for the reason why, an insider said it came down to the project’s scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.
The insider said that the reportedly $70 million-budgeted project is not going away, and will be re-assessed at “the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.”
Another source suggested that because Luca had no action movie experience, higher ups “may have wavered in their confidence.”
DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran initially said they made room for it in the release schedule due to the strength of the script by Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote Challengers and Queer.
The story is said to involve Rock teaming with up with the female French resistance fighter to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, which was said to have supernatural properties, before the Nazis get their hands on it.
