For years, comic books have been adapted into films or television, some of them more successful than others. However, there are a few titles that are universally praised as impeccable films.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan helmed one of the most influential superhero trilogies, The Dark Knight Trilogy. The films started in 2005 with Batman Begins, continued with 2008’s The Dark Knight, and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. Although all three of them received praise for different reasons, The Dark Knight is largely the most haunting of them all, and is often referred to as the best superhero movie of all time. Its influence is undeniable, as The Dark Knight has just become a hit again on Netflix, 17 years after its release, via Tudum.

‘I Was Terrified’: Michael Caine Recalls First Time Seeing Heath Ledger’s Joker on The Dark Knight Set
17 years after the release of The Dark Knight, Michael Caine reflects on his genuine terror of seeing Heath Ledger in action on the set.
Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was released on Apr. 1 in the U.S. in its entirety. However, only one film drew the attention of several subscribers: The Dark Knight. For the week between Apr. 7 and 13, The Dark Knight entered the Top 10 in the U.S., debuting in seventh place. Considering the movie was only available domestically, Netflix didn’t reveal how many views the second film received.
Many actors tackled the role of Bruce Wayne and jumped in the Batmobile to fight crime over the years, but Nolan’s trilogy starred Christian Bale, which remains one of the most successful iterations of the DC Comics superhero. The trilogy itself was a major success, and starred many critically acclaimed actors. The superhero film also starred Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman.

Armie Hammer’s The Dark Knight Movie Gets New Title After a ‘Very Friendly Conversation With Warner Bros.’
Armie Hammer has lost out on playing the Dark Knight again as his upcoming movie receives a new title following a friendly chat with Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan co-wrote the script with his brother Jonathan, and followed Bale’s Batman, looking forward to retiring as Batman, thinking the new district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) could protect Gotham. However, it all turns to chaos when the Joker (Heath Ledger) comes and threatens to destroy the city.
The movie was a major critical and commercial success. It has a rare achievement by having the critics and the audience in agreement on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film has a Certified Fresh 94% from both camps. It also has a 9.0 score on IMDb. Its critical success continued during the awards season, and the superhero film won two Oscars, one for Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Ledger’s marvelous performance. The actor’s family accepted the award posthumously, as the film was released after the actor passed away. The film also received praise from highly-regarded critic Roger Ebert, who praised the movie and Ledger’s performance.
The Dark Knight was also a hit at the box office. The movie had a high budget of $185 million, but ended its run with $1.01 billion at the worldwide box office. Fans loved the movie so much that the film almost earned back its profit from home market performance alone, as it sold DVD and Blu-rays worth $301 million, per The Numbers. It was also the highest-grossing film of 2008, but it fell just below 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed $1.082 billion globally, and topped the trilogy.
The Dark Knight, as well as the other two films in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, are available to stream on Netflix.
